#OwenCooks: Healthy Apple Crumble
I really should have called this series "#OwenBakes"
When I was a kid, my parents used to sometimes bake apple crisp for dessert, and I always thought it was a ripoff. I was a chocoholic through and through; give me chocolate ice cream or cookies or cake or something decadent and unhealthy; I'm not here for this fruit crap.
I'm still a chocoholic, which is why most of the desserts in this series are going to centre around feeding my addiction while minimizing processed sugar.
But I recently bought a bag of apples, and my family wasn't eating them as fast as I'd expected. On this new #ProjectNomad lifestyle kick of mine, a healthy apple crumble sounded like a fun kitchen project, and a pretty tasty dessert to boot.
I found this recipe from Amy's Healthy Baking and I can vouch for it! As usual with my baking projects, it has no added sugar; the sweetness comes from the fruit and from some maple syrup in the topping. So it's not too sweet, which is just fine by me.
Also as usual for me, I swapped out the butter for coconut oil, and the dessert turned out and tastes just fine.
Don't ask me what kind of apples I used; they were firm and red. Amy's recipe has some apple suggestions if you want to get all technical.
I've never made an apple crumble before, so I was surprised to learn that Amy recommends putting the dessert in the fridge for at least three hours after it has cooled from the oven; if your family is anything like mine, they'll nearly mutiny when you tell them that delicious-smelling concoction you've just set out to cool won't be available for their tastebuds until tomorrow!
But on the plus side, if you're a night owl like me, you can maybe sneak a tiny piece before bed. You know, just to test your work.
This dessert was delicious and a lot easier to make than I thought it would be. I didn't even miss the lack of chocolate!
